Volunteering Questions and Answers (Q and A)

Q.   Who is an ACL Volunteer?

A.   A library volunteer is a person like you who wants to assist the regular staff in providing library services to your community. Whether it is shelving books or helping with a special program, volunteers gain a knowledge of the library's inner workings and a sense of satisfaction in helping to improve the library's service to the public.

Q.  What kind of positions are offered to volunteers?

A.  Volunteers will be able to choose from several positions, including:

  • Adopt-A-Shelf Volunteer -- Keep a group of library shelves neat and orderly; choose your favorite subject area!

  • Booklists Developer -- Prepare booklists on various topics.

  • Graphic Artist -- Create bulletin board designs around library-related themes. Design flyers, bookmarks, signs, and special announcements.

  • Library Station Volunteer -- If you live in the vicinity of Craigsville or Deerfield, you may enjoy lending your talents to one of these stations.

  • PAC Docent -- Assist patrons in learning our Online Public Access Catalog.

  • Repairing Books, Videos, or Audio Tapes -- Help keep our materials in good repair for our grateful patrons.

  • Shelving Aide -- Organize book trucks and shelve in various departments.

  • Storytime Assistant -- If you enjoy working with children, we have children who will enjoy you!

    Q.  Can teenagers volunteer?

    A.  Yes!  The library has a very active Teen Volunteer Program during the summer. Teen volunteers help with the summer reading program as program aides, puppeteers, artists, shelvers, and even gardeners.   Teens must be twelve years old and submit an application form with a parent's or guardian's signature.

    Q. What can I expect in becoming a Volunteer?

    A.  First of all, you will be given a tour and brief orientation by the Volunteer Coordinator.  The Coordinator will work with you to match the library's needs with your interest.  Sometimes you will participate in a brief training period coordinated by a library staff member.

    Q.  How can I become a volunteer?

    A.  It's easy!  Simply ask to see the Volunteer Coordinator. If she is not available, leave your name and phone number at the Reference Desk. Our Volunteer Coordinator will call you soon to set up an appointment.
