REFERENCE POLICY

            The reference department of Augusta County Library provides reference services and materials to aid all library patrons in finding answers to their questions. Assistance is provided through in-house and remote means. Instructions in the use of resources will be provided as needed. If necessary, patrons will be referred to other libraries, agencies, or individuals to meet their information needs.

       The department will be headed by a person who has special training in the field of        reference services.  This individual will guide the selection, organization, and weeding of information sources. She/He will be assisted by trained or experienced individuals in this field who will staff the reference desk or be on call for reference during all hours the library is open.

     The reference department will maintain those in-library sources that do not circulate, as well as      electronic databases and resource links on the library’s website. Materials selection will be based      on the needs of the community in which each library is located , and may include up-to-date books, encyclopedias, guides, indexes, microforms, audio-visual materials, periodicals, pamphlets, maps, and electronic sources.

     Remote services will be provided via the library’s website through the e-mail reference service Ask A Librarian, databases such as FindItVa, and links to appropriate websites.
