Outreach Policy

The Augusta County Library creates an environment for people to learn, to explore, to enjoy, to create, and to connect with each other and their community.  The Augusta County Library provides the residents of the Augusta County area with materials and services to improve their quality of life by meeting their education and recreational needs.

Outreach events and programs take staff outside of library facilities to provide services and programs that meet patrons where they live, work, shop, and play.  Frequently, such opportunities aim to better serve patrons who are underserved by current library services or who have boundaries to accessing library facilities.

Outreach activities must support the library’s mission and strategic directions in one or more of the following ways:

Increase the library’s visibility and role in the community

Support regular or special library activities and services

Support the library’s service roles, goals, and objectives

Build community within populations underserved by the library

Teach early literacy practices and best methods

Provide educational or recreational opportunities that engage with the larger community

Outreach activities may be conducted at non-profit and public organizations, including, but not limited to childcare facilities and preschools, public and private schools, colleges and universities, government agencies, service groups, and other non-profit organizations. Locations must be within Augusta County, but events or organizations located within Staunton or Waynesboro will be considered if county citizens are served or attending.

Outreach activities at for profit businesses and events may be considered if they meet the requirements listed above and at the discretion of the library director.  The library will not conduct outreach activities at private events, such as birthday parties.

Since the library has limited staff, we will try our best to accommodate all requests, but in-library service must take priority.  There may be times when the library cannot fill requests for off-site service. In general, we will limit our attendance to one per year for each organization.  Please call with requests one month prior to the event.

All outreach activities must be approved by the library director.
